Owen was selected with Hensel Phelps Construction
for this design/build project. Hewitt Hall is
a 76,905 sf laboratory building which consists
of a three-story building with a basement portion,
that functions as a research laboratory and office
area. The building is divided into a research
laboratory and office. The structural system of
the building consists of cast-in-place concrete
slab over joists and girder construction due to
the requirement for more restrictive vibration
criteria for the laboratory area. The columns
and shear walls for the floor systems are supported
on a shallow foundation.

KAISER PERMANENTE, Medical Center,
Harbor City, CA
Owen provided engineering design services for
the replacement of four multi-zone air handling
units and a boiler serving Kaiser Permanente's
Harbor City Medical Center. One of the four air
handling units was enlarged to provide new HVAC
to a recently constructed building addition. The
boiler replacement project entailed modifications
to heating system piping, and consolidation of
two domestic hot water heating systems as well.
